Our Initiatives

Organizing

The Fifth District is a leader in the IAFF in organizing new locals. We believe it is our duty to organize the unorganized. Every fire fighter and paramedic deserves to be represented by a union! We fight to organize locals so that fire fighters and paramedics can have the hours, wages, working conditions and retirement security they need and deserve.

If you would like to organize, or if you have been contacted by an organization that does, do not hesitate to reach out.

Training

A union leader’s job is incredibly complicated. In any given day you are expected to know legal maneuvers to fight a case, fire safety standards, or to act as a counselor for a struggling member. Well trained and educated leaders are needed in order to effectively carry out this responsibility. The Fearless Fifth provides high quality, regular training for our local and state leaders in the form of zoom meetings with classes from national experts, new member meetings to help initiate our newest members on what the IAFF can do for them, and our Fifth District Conference which showcases the resources the IAFF provides and has in-depth training our leaders can take home to their locals.

Peer Support

Fire fighters and paramedics experience duty related traumatic events on a regular basis. These events take a cumulative toll, and our members need support in order to cope, recover, and move forward in their careers and their lives.

Research shows that sometimes the most effective form of help comes from the people we work alongside with. Peer support is a powerful tool to address our members’ mental health concerns.

Our team will provide peer support training across the district to equip our locals and states in establishing and equipping peer support teams.
