Mahlon Mitchell

IAFF Fifth District Vice President

Mahlon Mitchell was elected as Vice President for the Fifth District in 2024, succeeding DVP Emeritus Tom Thornberg. He joined the fire service at the age of 19 when he was hired as a fire fighter for the city of Madison, Wisconsin.  He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming an Apparatus/Engineer and then a Lieutenant.  He currently serves as a Lake Rescue Lieutenant at Fire Station 1 on Tiller 1 in downtown Madison.

His union career began early in his fire career. In his local, he began as a trustee for Fire Fighters Local 311 Charitable Foundation, served on the Executive Board, and rose to become local president in 2014, a position he holds to this day.  For the state, he was elected to the Executive Board of the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin in 2009, and became President in 2011. He has been instrumental in passing several landmark pieces of legislation for fire fighters and paramedics in Wisconsin.

In all of his roles, DVP Mitchell has sought to collaborate with other leaders to help build our union. He believes in the five core principles of union representation – hours, wages, working conditions, health and safety and retirement security and he works tirelessly to advance those interests.
